OSS Gate, which counts its founding from a kickoff event in December 2015, marks its 10th anniversary with its first-ever conference, OSS Gate Pass. Over the past decade the project has run workshops across many regions and communities where newcomers take their first step into OSS development, plus onboarding sessions supporting the second step. The day is set aside to look back on that work and to share what participants found helpful, surprising, or rewarding.
The timetable is built around a long run of short 10-minute talks. Speakers cover careers that opened up through OSS Gate, one person's push that ended up moving their whole company, running a workshop on YouTube, and more. Doors open at 13:00, the opening starts at 13:30, and a social gathering follows the 17:00 closing.
The venue is ANDPAD in Mita, Tokyo, and this is the first time people involved from across Japan gather in one room. Calls for session proposals, talks, and sponsors are still open, and travel and lodging support is planned for speakers and organizers coming from outside Tokyo.
About the community
A project aiming to steadily increase the number of people who take part in OSS development on an ongoing basis. Since 2015 it has worked with local communities across Japan to run workshops where newcomers experience their first step into OSS contribution, along with onboarding sessions that support the step after that. Participants range from developers approaching OSS for the first time to veterans who come to mentor, mostly working professionals who write software for a living. The usual format is small recurring workshops held region by region, and this is the first time people from across the country gather in one place.
